The First Amendment and AOC

A story that has hit the media Saturday afternoon has Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez back in the spotlight. In prior weeks before, there was a story that had President Donald Trump in this same sort of spotlight. Twitter and blocking certain critics/individuals who they do not particularly favor with.

It all started when a Columbia University Knight First Amendment Institution sent a letter to Ocasio-Cortez stating that she was violating First Amendment rights by blocking individuals whose views she did not agree with.

She responds to the backlash by stating that it should be my right to block individuals. However, the argument is whether or not this once personal account is being used for governmental/political gain.

It is currently still up to the court to decide whether or not the congresswomen is at fault for blocking such individuals from her personal Twitter account.

Lisa S. Hoppenjans, the Director of the First Amendment Clinic at the Washington University School of Law, states that the First Amendment would not prevent her from blocking such individuals for sending threats. However, it is in violation if she is blocking individuals because she does not agree with their views.
